Visakhapatnam, shortened as Vizag, is a port city and the second largest city in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Often referred to as The Jewel of the East Coast, The City of Destiny, and Goa of the East Coast, Vizag is the third largest city on the east coast of India, after Kolkata and Chennai. The city is a strip of land situated on the plains and hilly regions of the Eastern Ghats extending to the Bay of Bengal. It lies at an altitude of 5 meters above sea level covering an area of 540 square kilometers. But it is flanked by numerous peaks reaching as high as 900 meters in the Eastern Ghats. Visakhapatnam houses the Indian Navy’s Eastern Naval Command. The city inhibits many adoring beaches, beautiful hillocks, and dazzling scenic beauty. Visakhapatnam is the only natural harbor on the entire eastern coast of India.

Apart from being a port city, Vishakhapatnam is primarily an industrial hub with several state-owned heavy industries to its credit. Besides, it has one of the most advanced steel plants, one of the country’s largest ports, and the oldest shipyard. The history of Vizag takes one back to the times of King Visakha Varma several thousand years back. There are many historical sites that give clues about the history of Visakhapatnam. Hindu religious books suggest that the city was a part of the Kalinga Empire in the 5th century BC. The old objects found in this land also ensure the existence of the Buddhist Empire. Due to its coastal location, Vishakhapatnam witnesses tropical savanna climate with moderately same temperatures round the year. Months from October to March are the best times to catch a glimpse of this spectacular city.

Over the decades, Vizag has seen magnificent development in terms of trade and commerce. But it’s not just several fast-growing industries that attracts people from all over the world to this city, but the fascinating and colonial tourist attractions that draw in many visitors. Beaches, parks, long drives along the sea coast, zoological parks, museums, hill stations, colorful valleys, temples, and mountain ranges are some fabulous spots to catch a glimpse. The must-visit sites include Kailashagiri Hills and Park, Beach Road, Rushikonda Beach, Simhachalam, Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, Araku Valley, The Buddhist Complex, Visakha Museum, Submarine Musuem, RV Beach, Vuda Beach, Ramakrishna Mission Beach, Ross Hill, Lawson's Bay Beach, and Dolphin's Nose.
