Herbs for Depression

Depression is a state of sadness or despair that has advanced to the point of being disruptive to an individual's social functioning and/ or daily activities. It is caused by an imbalance of brain chemicals, along with other factors. Symptoms of depression include feelings of overwhelming sadness, a decrease in the amount of interest or pleasure in routine activities, changing appetite, marked weight gain or loss, disturbed sleep pattern, decline in self-esteem, and feelings of guilt, helplessness, hopelessness, anxiety, or fear. Here is a list of herbs that are useful for depression. These herbs either treat the cause of depression or minimize the related side effects.

Licorice
Licorice contains most of the same monoamine oxidase inhibitors that are found in more powerful prescription medication used for treating depression and mental disorders. It is advised to consult a physician before consuming licorice, as it can trigger side effects as well.

St. John's Wort
High quality St. John’s Wort extract effectively relieves depression. Natural, wholesome, inexpensive and easily available, it is the dream remedy for depression.

Ginkgo (Ginkgo Biloba)
