ITANAGAR


Itanagar, capital of the state of Arunachal Pradesh also as known as 'the Land of the Dawnlit Mountains', is Spread well over an area of 2,500 acres. Nestled on top of low flat hills, the city offers a lovely climate. Itanagar is placed in a beautiful and serene surroundings with a bracing climate making them its hallmark qualities. Ruins of a old palace and other such monuments embraces within themselves the city's ancient history, some historians even identify the city with the ancient 11th century capital of Mayapur, under the Jitari dynasty. Itanagar today is divided into two parts, each 10 km apart from each other, with the older one named Naharlagun.

Itanagar has been the capital of Arunachal Pradesh since 20th April 1974. The township is situated at 350 metres above mean sea level. No railway enters Arunachal. But Indian Airlines and Vayudoot do serve Tezu, Ziro and Pasighat. It's, in other words, India's largest north-eastern state. Itanagar is under the huge influence of Tibetan culture on the people living in this state. The beautiful yellow roofed shrine that was declared as a holy place by the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama provides an extremely beautiful view of the region. This influence is also visualized as one walks through the by lanes of Itanagar on can see people dressed in the local dress of the Tibetan people.

The nearest railhead is North Lakhimpur in Assam, which is only 60 km from Itanagar.
By Road:
Itanagar is connected with other major towns in the region such as Agartala, Aizawl, Kohima, Guwahati, Imphal, and Shillong.
