Daman is a popular tourist destination in the Daman District, in the union territory of Daman & Diu, India. This bustling city is located about 93 kilometers away from Mumbai in north. Daman is bordered by the River Kolak on the northern side, River Kalai on the southern part, Gujarat on the eastern side, and in the western side there is the Gulf of Cambay. This city was earlier known by the name of 'Damao', which is a Portuguese name. Daman is spread over an area of 72 square kilometers at an elevation of 12 metres above the average sea level. Being near to the sea level, this city experiences a pleasant and moderate climate round the year. The period from September to May is known as the best time to visit Daman.

Daman is very well-connected to other parts of India mainly though National Highway No.8, however its neighboring city, Vapi (located 12 km away) is connected to the Indian railway network. The mainland of Daman is divided by the Daman Ganga River into two parts, explicitly Nanidaman and Motidaman. According to the historical evidences, Daman is believed to have been ruled by the Kushana Emperor. Many legends however claim that it was fortuitously discovered by Diogo-de-Melo in 1523, while flowing towards Ormuz. Later, in 1531, Daman was established as a Portuguese colony and remained the same for over 400 years. A large fort was built in Motidaman in the 16th century to guard against the Mughals. The fort is still there in its original form. In fact, most of the government offices are housed in it. Finally, in 1961, as a result of war between the Portuguese and the Indians, Daman became a part of Republic of India.

Daman is known for producing a variety of products like pesticides, chemicals, fertilizers, toys, electronics, dyes, printing ink, windmills, plastics, etc. It is an eminent tourist destination for people from Gujarat and other nearby regions. The main reason behind its popularity is its beautiful virgin beaches. Devka beach and Jumpore beach are the two illustrious beaches of Daman District.
