Uttarakhand is located in northern India and shares its borders with Tibet in the north, Nepal in the east, Himachal Pradesh in the west and Uttar Pradesh in the east. The state was carved out of Uttar Pradesh in 2000 and was earlier known by the name of Uttaranchal. In January 2007, the name of the state was changed to Uttarakhand.
