Hyderabad Airport

Hyderabad International Airport, also called Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, is located near Shamshabad, approximately 22 kilometers from Hyderabad city. Spread over an area of 5,400 acres, it is the largest airport in India and the only international airport in Andhra Pradesh. It started its operations on 23rd March 2008 and today, boasts of a capacity to handle 40 million passengers every year. Rajiv Gandhi International Airport also claims the distinction of being the only Greenfield airport in India.

The second public-private partnership venture in the Indian airports, Hyderabad International Airport is designed to handle New Large Aircrafts (NLA), including the Airbus A380. The airport has been designed in such a way that future expansions will not have any effect on its operations. Rajiv Gandhi International Airport serves as the center for JetLite, Kingfisher Airlines, SpiceJet and IndiGo Airlines, apart from acting as a hub for airlines like Air India, Jet Airways and Deccan Airlines. It has one of the longest runways in the world.

History
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is named after the former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi. It became the international airport of Hyderabad, after replacing the former airport, Begumpet Airport. It was on March 23, 2008, when the commercial flight operations began at the airport. Presently, the airport is the second public-private partnership venture in the Indian airports, the first being the Cochin International Airport.

Development
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is being developed in three phases, to provide world class facilities to the passengers. When it gets complete, the airport will be the largest in the country, in terms of area size (being spread over an area of 5400 acres). The first phase of the development is almost complete, with the construction of Terminal 1 that has a capacity to handle 12 million passengers annually.
