Pune Airport

Pune International Airport is located in the state of Maharashtra, at a distance of 10 km to the northeast of Pune. It is managed by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and shares its runway with Lohegaon Airbase. The airport has been enjoying international status ever since Air India began operating direct flights from Pune to Dubai and Indian Airlines scheduled flights to Singapore. It has regular flights connecting the city to major Indian cities, such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. Pune Airport is one of the bases of the Indian Air Force, from where civil flights also operate.

Modernization
The Airports Authority of India is constructing additional terminals at the Pune International Airport, as the current terminal has the capacity to handle only 550 passengers at a time. After the new terminals get constructed, the capacity of the airport will increase, allowing it to handle as much as 1200 passengers at a time. The current runway is also under renovation and will be extended to 3,250 meters soon, from the current length of 2,600 meters.

New Pune International Airport
The government of Maharashtra has entrusted the responsibility of building a new Pune International Airport to Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC). Earlier, Talegaon Dabhade and Saswad were the probable sites for this project. However, now the area between Chakan and Rajgurunagar, mainly around the villages of Chandus and Shiroli, is being considered. Both Chakam and Rajgurunagar are at a distance of 40 km from Pune, along the Pune-Nashik National highway, National Highway 50.

The new Pune International Airport will act as a gateway of Western Maharashtra to the rest of the world. With the completion of the project, the agricultural and floricultural exports from the area are also expected to get a boost, due to the faster movement of goods. Spreading over 24.28 hectares, it will become one of the largest airports in India, after completion. The new airport will have two runways and will get more international flights, once the project becomes complete.
