Indian golfer Gaurav Ghei was born on September 25, 1968. Ghei's historic win at the $500,000 Gadgil Western Masters in November 1995 catapulted him to national fame.
In 1996, Ghei made international headlines when he defeated Ryder Cup veteran Colin Montgomerie in the 16-nation Alfred Dunhill Cup at St Andrews as India stunned hosts and strong favourites Scotland.
In June 1997, Ghei became the first Indian to qualify for the prestigious British Open through the tough Sectional Qualifying event and played at the Royal Troon.
