Along with Kamlesh Mehta and Chetan Baboor, S. Raman is one of the few Indian table tennis players to have excelled at the international stage.
Raman, who hails from Tamil Nadu, clinched his maiden National Championship in Goa in 1993 and then another National Championship title followed in 1999 in Lucknow.
In 1997, Raman teamed up with compatriot Chetan Baboor to bag the doubles gold in the Commonwealth table tennis meet at Glasgow. He won the doubles gold again at the 1999 Commonwealth Championships.
The 1995 SAF Games at Chennai was a highpoint in Raman's career, with India winning the team gold and Raman clinching a gold in the singles event, silver in the doubles and another silver in the mixed doubles.
S. Raman, an Arjuna Awardee, is employed with the Indian Oil Corporation. A fitness freak, during his heydays Raman was reputed to be one of the fittest players in the national circuit.
