The unassuming Padukone took Indian badminton to a sublime level. For long, despite being technically gifted, Indian shuttlers failed to make their mark in international tournaments because of the lack of physical fitness. They perished when confronted with the fast all-court game of the Chinese and Europeans.
Padukone realized this and his decision to shift base to Denmark improved the physical aspect of his game and the result was there for all to see. Like Padukone, Pullela Gopichand was another Indian badminton player who excelled at big tournaments. Gopichand emulated his mentor Prakash by winning the coveted All England Championship.
