Seva is known as selfless service to mankind. Seva is
deemed essential for the spiritual upliftment of the person. It
accelerates the process of enlightenment as it refines the person from
within. The selfless service concept provides opportunity to put Siddha
Yoga teachings into action in a practical manner. Seva also brings
people together and allows them to work with each other in a spiritual
environment.
This can be understood with the help of a saying which states that it is
easy to be a saint on a mountaintop, but the real proof is visible when
you return to the marketplace. Seva can also be defined as an expression
of love in action, as it implies service without expectation of any
reward. It teaches how to offer service in daily life exhibiting
generosity and freedom. It can be in the form of service offered to your
local ashram, guruseva (service to guru), or what you give to your job
and loved ones.
As a part of seva, many activities can be performed. It can be anything
from cooking, cleaning, teaching, or working on the computer, but it
should be with a focus on the Self and with awareness. The main purpose
behind the concept of seva is to inculcate the attitude of service and
to dedicate one's life and actions towards the service of God. This
makes the life of a disciple a constant state of Yoga. Eventually, it
emphasizes that service to mankind is service to God.
