Kundalini is corporeal energy which is present in
each one of us. In Sanskrit, it means 'coiled up'. At times it is also
referred to as 'serpent power' as Kundalini is envisioned as a serpent
coiled at the base of the spine. Kundalini is connected deeply with
chakras and nadis in the body. There are a number of models in Sanskrit
which describe the actual phenomena of Kundalini Yoga and Awakening.
Kundalini Yoga is a system which utilizes meditative techniques and
yogic movements to focus on psycho-spiritual growth and the body's
potential for maturation. The phenomena comprises of bodily postures,
expressive movements and utterances, character logical meditations,
breathing patterns, and degrees of concentration. Kundalini Yoga links
movements with breath. It involves the movement of energy from lower
chakras to higher chakras.
Chakras are energy centers located in a human body. They are seven in
number with the lowest situated at the base of the spine and the highest
at the top of the head. These chakras along the spine are the crucial
elements in Kundalini Yoga. Through a number of meditative processes the
Kundalini energy dormant at the base of the spine becomes active. It
slowly starts moving upwards towards the top most chakra.
On its journey, it passes through all the chakras, thereby activating
them. Each chakra has its own special feature which contributes towards
the overall stimulation of mind, body and soul. Once the Kundalini
energy reaches the highest chakra, it unites itself with the Supreme
Being (Lord Shiva). This results in attainment of eternal bliss.
However, it is cautioned that Kundalini Yoga should only be practiced in
the guidance of an experienced Guru, or otherwise it might lead to
physiological disorders.
