Sherlock Holmes Crochet Hat

Crochet a hat just like one that Sherlock Holmes wear. This crocheted hat will fir the size of 22 ½-inch head and uses basic stitches such as chain stitch, slipstitch, single crochet and double crochet. The gauge pf the crochet should be such that 1 inch by 1 inch of crocheted square should have 4 single crochet rows, each row having 4 single crochets.

Method:

To make the Side:

Row 1: Ch (chain) 29, sc (single crochet) in second ch (chain) from hook, sc (single crochet) in each ch (chain) across, turn. (28 sc (single crochet) made)
Note: Work rows 2-89 in back lps (loops).
Row 2: Ch (chain) 1, sc (single crochet) in first 20 sts (stitches); for Top, leave last 8 sts (stitches) unworked, turn. (20)
Row 3: Ch (chain) 1, sc (single crochet) in each st (stitch) across, turn. (20)
Row 4: Ch (chain) 1, sc (single crochet) in first 20 sts (stitches), sc (single crochet) in 8 unworked sts (stitches) three rows below, turn. (28)
Row 5: Ch (chain) 1, sc (single crochet) in each st (stitch) across, turn. (28)
Rows 6-89: Repeat rows 2-5 consecutively.
Row 90: For Center Back Seam, matching sts (stitches), sl st (slip stitch) starting Ch (chain) on opposite side of row 1 and back lps (loops) of row 89 together. Fasten off.
Run a gathering thread through ends of rows at Top, pull tight; sew opening closed.

To make the Tie:
