Homemade Crafts : Canopy Bed Drape

Canopy Bed Drape

Making canopy bed drape is not as simple as it looks. Alignment of fabric, especially if it has patterns on it, is very important. The double-sided drape should be so aligned that the pattern displays look correct from various angles from which the drape can be viewed. Similarly, using more than one width of fabric also requires aesthetic sense on how to place the fabrics. Full-width fabrics should be in the center of the drape while you may add equally wide fabric at both the sides of the drape as required.

Things You Will Need:
  • 4 Curtain Poles That are Six Inches Wider Than Your Bed
  • Long Length of String and a Drawing Pin
  • Matching Thread
  • Stick and Sew Velcro as Wide as the Drape
  • Double-sided Fabric
Method:
  • Install first curtain pole on the ceiling and level it with the foot of the bed.
  • Second curtain pole is to be installed on the ceiling about one foot lower than the head of the bed.
  • Install third curtain pole on the wall behind the head of the bed about two feet higher than the pillows.
  • Use a string over the curtain poles to get an idea of the shape the draped curtain will take
  • Measure the length of the string to know how much fabric you will need and buy a couple of inches more than the measured length for seam allowances.
  • Measure the width of the bed and the fabric to decide whether you need to buy more than one widths of the fabric.
  • You may need to buy some extra fabric for patterned fabrics, so that patterns match correctly.
  • You may avoid buying just a few inches of extra fabric by adjusting the overall width of the drape
  • Cut the fabric to the desired length plus the seam allowance and join the widths together using flat seam.
  • Turn in 1-inch seam allowance at the bottom end of the drape and slipstitch and stitch 'sew' Velcro close to this fold.
  • Attach 'stick' side of the Velcro to the wall at the head of the bed.
  • Slide the fourth curtain pole through the casing at the top edge of the drape and attach the finials or curtain ends.
  • Now, drape the canopy over the curtain poles, positioned strategically, and secure the bottom end of the drape by pressing the 2 sides of the Velcro together.
