Mumps can be described as a viral infection, which
causes swelling in one or both of the parotid glands of the affected
person. Parotid glands are one of the three pairs of salivary glands in
humans, located below and in front of the ears. After the development of
vaccinations, mumps are have ceased to be a fatal disease, as it used to
be earlier. Still, if not treated on time, the ailment can result in a
lot of complications. Mumps are primarily caused by a virus named
Paramyxovirus and is characterized by the swelling of salivary glands.

The main cause of mumps is Paramyxovirus. The virus mainly infects the
saliva of a person and spreads easily from one person to another. A
highly contagious disease, mumps spreads when you come in contact with
an infected person who has just sneezed or coughed. Some other ways,
through which the virus can spread, include sharing utensils with an
infected person. At times, parotid glands swell due to the influenza
virus or Coxsackie virus, making a person susceptible to mumps. Lack of
immunisation and weakened immune system also adds to the risk of getting
infected with mumps.
