Hiccups can be described as brief, irritable spasms
of the diaphragm that can last from a few seconds to a few minutes.
There are basically three types of hiccups - transient or acute hiccups,
persistent hiccups and intractable hiccups. While the transient or acute
hiccups last only for a few minutes, persistent hiccups last longer than
48 hours, but less than a month. Intractable hiccups last for more than
two months and are often the result of an underlying medical condition.

throat. While some people have four hiccups in a minute, there are many
who get 60 hiccups a minute. Usually, they are not a cause for concern.
Still, if a person has prolonged hiccups for more than 48 hours, it is a
cause of worry and requires medical attention.
