Herpes is one of the most common sexually transmitted
diseases (STDs) found in the world at large. A highly infectious
disease, herpes is generally transmitted from one person to another
during sexual activity. It causes blisters either around the genital
area or in the mouth. Affecting men as well as women, genital herpes is
very difficult to treat. Once affected, it can only be controlled, but
not cured. Genital herpes is caused during vaginal, anal or oral sexual
contact. Read the following lines, to know more about the causes and
symptoms of genital herpes.
Causes Of Herpes
Herpes is generally caused by two types of herpes simplex virus (HSV)
infections - HSV type 1 and HSV type 2. While the former causes cold
sores or fever blisters around the mouth, an after effect of oral sex,
the latter spreads through sexual contact and skin-to-skin contact. HSV
type 2 virus causes blisters or groups of small ulcers (open sores) on
and around the genitals, in both men and women. Though a highly
contagious disease, the infection cannot spread through contact with
toilets, towels or other objects used by an infected person, as the
virus dies quickly, once out of the body.
