The term 'goitre' refers to a swelling at the back of
the neck. It can be described as the inflammation of the thyroid gland
and is seen more in women than in men. Thyroid is a butterfly-shaped
gland, located below the Adam's apple, at the base of the neck. When
goiter strikes a person, this gland gets enlarged and leads to
discomfort. Though goiter does not cause pain, sometimes it may lead to
coughing problem and even difficultly in swallowing and breathing.
