Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Limited

Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC), a global giant of motorcycle manufacturing is headquartered in Japan. It holds major stake in its Indian subsidiary, Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Limited (SMIL). SMIL was set up after Suzuki's re-entry into the Indian two-wheeler market after it severed ties with partner TVS in 2000-01. Suzuki was then the technology provider in the erstwhile joint venture company TVS Suzuki.

Suzuki, a Japanese automobiles manufacturing company, manufacturers a complete range of motorcycles as well as small combustion-powered engine products. A global giant, it has its production units in more than 22 countries. However, in India, it is mostly known as car manufacturer, thanks to its collaboration with Maruti. Together they are Maruti Suzuki, largest automobile sellers in India.

Suzuki operates in three main segments including motorcycles, automobiles and others. A top automobile manufacturer, it produces motorcycles with a displacement capacity ranging from 50cc to 1200cc. It also makes sports utility vehicles (SUVs), all terrain vehicles (ATVs), minicars, premium and luxury cars.

In 2005, the company had more than 13000 employees across the world. Its revenue in the year 2007 was $26,831 million.

Suzuki began manufacturing motorcycles in 1952. During the 1950s, 1960s and the better part of the 1970s, the company made motorcycles with two-stroke engines. Suzuki became the first Japanese bike manufacturer to win a motocross world championship when Joel Robert won the 1970 250cc title. Suzuki introduced its first motorcycles with a four-stroke engine, the GS400 and GS750, in 1976. Thereafter, Suzuki established a reputation as a manufacturer of well-engineered sport motorcycles. In 1994, Suzuki partnered with Nanjing Jincheng Machinery to create a Chinese motorcycle manufacturer and exporter named Jincheng Suzuki.
